Olympian, Blake Aldridge, Set to fly the flag for Britain from 28 meters in the forthcoming Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2012
Not long now till the world will have the chance to see the awe-inspiring spectacle of divers, with only their speedos to protect them, plunging 28m into the sea in some of the world’s most spectacular diving locations. In June, the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2012 kicks off at its first location in Corsica and amongst them will be former Olympian, Blake Aldridge.
Having got to the top of his game in 10m Diving, Blake qualified this year to be a permanent member of the prestigious Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2012 Tour. This event pushes the boundaries of this sport to the limit and involves diving 28m from platforms jutting out of sheer cliffs in 7 locations worldwide.
Blake has been training hard in Dubai since he qualified for the Tour at the Red Bull Qualification Competition in Sydney in February. Blake has always maintained that his long-time sponsor, Apogee Corporation, has been instrumental in his successful transition to this new discipline having given him the opportunity and time to train in a state-of-the-art diving facility in Dubai.
Blake’s transition from 10 meters to 28 meters has been staggering and only goes to highlight the natural skill, strength of character and discipline of this talented individual. Having spent his entire diving career perfecting 10m diving, he was invited by the World High Diving Federation to have a go at High Diving. This he did to great effect, becoming European Champion at his first attempt and repeating this twice more.
As a result of his meteoric rise in this sport, he was spotted by the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series organisers and, as a consequence, was invited as a wild card into the 2011 Tour. Having acquitted himself well, he was then invited to enter the qualifiers for a place as a permanent member of the 2012 tour, which he duly did, performing the highest scoring dive in the process and coming second overall.
So, there is great anticipation and expectation regarding his potential during the 7 stops that make up the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series Tour in 2012.
Blake says “I’m really looking forward to the World Cliff Diving Tour to start, it seems such a long time since the qualification and now the anticipation is killing me. I just want to get on the tour, start diving and, in particular, seeing all of the other Red Bull divers and support staff that over a short time have become a second family.
Blake is especially glad that, for the first time, the series will have a stop in the UK, which will give him a chance to perform to a home crowd.
Blake went on to say “I’m really looking forward to the stop in the UK which will be on 8th September in Wales as I’ll be diving in front of a home crowd. Also, and more importantly for me, my sponsors Apogee Corporation will be there to see me in action and be able to see that all their support and hard work with me has paid off.”
Jason Collins, CEO and Co Founder of Apogee Corporation said “We are well aware of how dedicated Blake is to his diving and the determination that he has shown to achieving his new goals in Cliff Diving is to be commended. We wish him well in the 2012 tour. I am sure he is the one to watch this year.”
